TECHNIQUE

These pieces are created using two or three layers of mesh, each layer has been moulded in relief by hand and then are placed - one on top of the other - about 5cm apart. Thus, adding a 3D effect to the existent moire’. Next they are brought to the colour laboratory and carefully sprayed, this gives the effect of movement when one walks past the artwork. Finally, they are mounted on to either a wooden frame, or set behind plexiglass, so as to not be intrusive to the actual art.

KOI

A flagship piece in Katrin’s work is inspired by the koi. This fish has a powerful and energetic life-force, demonstrated by its ability to swim against currents and even travel upstream.
The characteristics associated with the koi include good fortune, prosperity, longevity, courage, ambition and perseverance. The colouring of the fish represents certain aspects of life, such as, the white koi with a red spot symbolises professional success. Whilst, the black koi symbolises life-changes and transformation and the golden fish signifies riches and wealth.

MEDUSAS/JELLYFISH

Katrin’s fascination with aquatics continues with the seemingly unimportant jellyfish. First appearing around 500 millions yeas ago, this creature has changed little and yet has outlived every dinosaur and ancient civilisation before us. They are found in all bodies of water, and live between the surface to the greatest depths. Unlike the Koi, the jellyfish - not having a heart, brain or nervous system - goes with the current. Some jellyfish are among the most poisonous animals that exist in the animal kingdom. Their tentacles can be up to 40 meters long and their size can vary from being as big as a human being or so small you barely can see it. Even though they have a bad reputation, they also have a very important roll in the ecological balance of the ocean.

BUTTERFLIES

The butterflies, unlike the other pieces, is created in relief on one layer of mesh. Then sprayed together with a canvas. These are then offset to give a distorted, dynamic effect.
